Alvar and Aino Aalto for Artek Tea Trolley 900

This is an original ‘Tea Trolley 900’ Modern Cart, designed in 1937 by Aino and Alvar Aalto for the World Exhibition in Paris.

The Aalto’s use of Finnish birch and rattan could be considered an early form of “organic modernism”; it was their take on the ‘International Style’, which celebrated wood in its natural state.

The trolley features a white ceramic-tiled top, and has an attached rattan basket which makes it perfect for serving. The piece’s frame is made from birch which has been bent, and the top and bottom trays are of form-pressed birch plywood. The wheels are lined with rubber to give it a smooth ride.
